Shimonoseki 下関
Try ‘puffer fish’ & walk to Kyūshū
At the westernmost tip of Honshū is Shimonoseki, famous for its fugu (puffer fish). Fugu sashimi is a famously dangerous dish, because if it’s not prepared correctly by a qualified chef, it’s poisonous and kills!
Head to Karato Fish Market, specialising in fugu, where they prepare it properly - the markets are on the ground floor with restaurants above.
Kaikyokan Aquarium has about 500 species of fish, including over 100 varieties of pufferfish from all around the world.
While the 1.068km Kanmon Bridge that links Honshū to Kyūshū catches the eye, it’s the pedestrian tunnel under the water that catches the imagination. Walk or take a bicycle to Kyūshū!
