Skiing & Snowboarding

Tims Picks

Japan has a reputation as a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts and has long been popular with foreign skiers and snowboarders. The snow is superb, there are onsen to soak in and Japanese food & drink for ‘apres ski’ - plus that amazing Japanese culture is just all around you.

There are over 450 ski areas operating in Japan. Check out Snow Japan for an independent look at all of them and an excellent introduction to winter sports in Japan.

A few hotspots that are set up and cater well to visiting skiers and boarders from abroad are Niseko and Furano in Hokkaidō, plus Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen in Nagano prefecture.

There are still another 450 or so ski areas out there though! It’s relatively easy to get off-the-beaten-track when it comes to ski areas if you’re feeling adventurous.
