Café Kessabine
Sweet little restaurant at the end of the Jemaa (b,l,d; $–$$)
Although it calls itself a café, and you can indeed stop by for just a tea or coffee, Café Kessabine is actually a very good little budget restaurant. It's located right next to the Kissariat el Guessabine, Kessabine and Guessabine being different French spellings of the same Arabic name.
Café Kessabine isn't quite as budget as the very very cheapest places (tajines here are 50–95dh), but the food is a cut above, and a little bit more innovative. If you can get one of the two front seats on the top floor, you also have a view over the street below and the very northeastern corner of the Jemaa el Fna.
As well as the usual dishes – chicken with lemon and olives, beef with prunes and so on – they also offer one with courgette/zucchini and thyme, and a vegetarian version of pastilla, plus salads, sandwiches, and some tempting desserts including crème brûlée.
