Ben Youssef Mosque
Marrakesh's original Friday mosque - جامع ابن يوسف
The Ben Youssef Mosque stands on the site of the city’s first congregational (Friday) mosque, before the Koutoubia took over.
Built under the Almoravids in 1070, the original mosque was torn down and rebuilt by the Almohads, and almost entirely rebuilt again at the beginning of the nineteenth century under Moulay Slimane (sultan 1792–1822). The mosque's 40m-high minaret dates from then.
The interior (open to Muslims only) isn’t especially exciting, but the wooden ceilings are worth checking out, as is the decoration around the mihrab (the niche indicating the direction of prayer).
