Place Ben Youssef & Around
Place Ben Youssef (ساحة بن يوسف), or Place de la Kissaria, is an open square at the northern end of the souks area, surrounded by important buildings.
On its east side of the square is the Marrakesh Museum, housed in a handsome nineteenth century mansion.
The other buildings around the square form what are called the Ben Youssef Complex, the institutions associated with the Ben Youssef Mosque, which is on the square’s north side.
The most important of the institutions associated with the Ben Youssef Mosque, up an alley in the square’s northeastern corner, is the exquisitely decorated Ben Youssef Medersa, which was a Koranic school attached to the mosque.
On the south side of Place Ben Youssef, new walls block you from seeing the Almoravid koubba, the one surviving building put up by the city’s Almoravid founders.
