Chrob ou Chouf fountain
Marrakesh's most famous drinking fountain - نافورة شرب وشوف
Chrob ou Chouf is Marrakesh's most famous public drinking fountain. The name is a French rendering of the Arabic shrab wa-shūf, meaning "drink and look", an invitation to passers-by to do both.
The fountain dates from the time of the Saadian sultan Ahmed el Mansour (ruled 1578–1603).
The Chrob ou Chouf fountain is in a recess topped by a beautifully carved cedar lintel. It's got a little worn over the centuries, but the fine work on it is still clear to see.
Above the inscriptions, the wood is carved in a honeycomb stalactite style (murqanas), which is quite common inside buildings, but usually in stucco (plaster) rather than wood.
