1269–1669: Merenid & Saadian
After being the capital of the Almoravid and Almohad states, Marrakesh fell in 1269 to the Merenid dynasty, who ruled from Fez.
The city regained its status as capital in 1529 under the Saadians.
The Ben Youssef Medersa was founded by the Merenids, but today's building dates from the time of the Saadians.
The Saadians' most important monument is the Saadian Tombs. The El Badi Palace is also Saadian, as are the Mouassine Mosque and Bab Doukkala Mosque and their fountains, and the Chrob ou Chouf fountain.
