Dar Yacout
Wonderful decor, good food (d; $$$)
With copious food in sumptuous surroundings, Dar Yacout is a magical gastronomic experience in an all-inclusive palatial restaurant.
Dar Yacout belonged to British honorary consul Mohammed Zkhiri. He commissioned Marrakesh’s own zany American interior designer Bill Willis to create an over-the-top Arabian Nights-style salon, with glass, mirrors, chandeliers, delightful mosaics, grand fireplaces and plenty of tadelakt (the smooth plaster that Willis made trendy). It’s like eating in an imaginary Arabian palace.
You start off with a drink on the panoramic roof terrace before moving down into the palatial salon, where you sit at a petal-strewn table while waiters clad in fezzes and jellabas bring out a succession of Moroccan dishes, and a troupe of fine musicians play classical Arabic melodies. The meal begins with a huge selection of Moroccan salads, followed by chicken with olives and conserved lemons, and then lamb, finishing with a sweet pastilla, mint tea and pastries.
