Grand Café de la Poste
Grand old colonial brasserie, beautifully revived (l,d; $$$)
The Grand Café de la Poste isn’t really a café, but it is very grand – a fine old 1920s brasserie with a wonderful French-colonial interior, and excellent French and Moroccan food.
The menu changes regularly, but expect to find items like prime rib of beef with bernaise sauce and green beans (295dh), or lamb shank with mash (185dh). Afters include a divine gateau coulant (chocolate cake with a gooey centre, 85dh). Everything is beautifully cooked, with just the right amount of spices and seasonings to complement the dish. A lot of the vegetables are organically grown on the restaurant’s own farm.
As for the interior, it’s nothing short of magnificent. It’s on three levels, with tiled floors, marble table tops, cast-iron bannisters, rattan chairs, comfy couches, and elegant houseplants and potted palms, harking back to an age of grandeur that slotted in just after the fin de siècle (1890s, 19-Os) and just before Art Deco (late 1920s, 1930s).
