La Taverne
Decent old restaurant with garden dining & bar (l,d; $$)
La Taverne claims to be the oldest restaurant in Marrakesh.
Established in colonial times, La Taverne has a smoky old bar, and a restaurant with a very pleasant shaded outdoor eating area where you can take your meal among plants and vines.
The food here is nothing out of the ordinary, but it's reliably good, and very moderately priced. And it's served in old-fashioned style by waiters in white jackets.
Moroccan dishes include chicken tajine with olive and lemon (80dh), or there are French dishes such as steak au poivre (90dh). They always have a fish of the day (75dh), and although it isn't the most veg-friendly place in town, they do offer a vegetarian tajine (70dh).
They also do a good-value 150dh set menu. And it's licensed, so you can have wine or beer with your meal.
The bar is separate, and like a lot of Marrakesh drinking holes, it's a little bit rough and ready; women won't want to wander in alone, for example. However, the restaurant's eating areas are family-friendly, and great value.
