Calèches: Horse-Drawn Carriages

Moroccan Street Sign - Caution Donkey Cart

A popular treat among tourists in Marrakesh is a ride in a horse-drawn carriage or calèche.

Calèches can be hired at Arset el Bilk, just off the Jemaa el Fna on the way to the Koutoubia, and also in Place des Ferblantiers by the Mellah, outside some of the big hotels in Hivernage, and at the Majorelle Garden. They take up to five passengers and charge around 150–180dh per hour.

The two most popular routes are: a tour round the city walls (around two hours), or a trip round the Palmery (around three hours). Always make it clear to the driver what exactly you want, and fix the price and duration in advance. You can also just use a calèche for any destination instead of a cab.

You'll probably want to haggle over the price, but do be prepared to pay a fair rate and a good tip (if deserved) – calèche drivers aren’t exactly rich.
