The Mellah

Mellah street

The Mellah (الملاح) is the old Jewish quarter, where all the city’s Jews were once required to live. Today, almost everybody in the Mellah is Muslim, with just 150 or so Jewish residents left. It’s a poor neighbourhood, but undergoing reovation and a certain amount of gentrification.

Place des Ferblantiers

Place des Ferblantiers

The main entrance to the Mellah is Place des Ferblantiers (31.619750, -7.984750), formerly Place du Mellah, a large open square with tinsmiths’ workshops on its east side and cheap eating places on its west side. It’s worth checking out the tinsmiths’ shops, whose lanterns make attractive souvenirs.
