Bitoun Synagogue
Old synagogue with a striking exterior - كنيس البيتون
Located above a herb shop on Rue Arset el Mâach (Rue de l’Electricité), the Bitoun Synagogue is notable for its striking mustard yellow exterior with Star of David motifs.
Unfortunately the interior is a private home and closed to the public, but the outside is in any case just as interesting.
Built during the colonial period, the Bitoun Synagogue is outside the original Mellah (Jewish quarter). Like many of the buildings in the same street, it was designed by the locally based French architect Paul-Sébastien Haberlach as part of a project called Kissariat Israel, which he embarked on in 1929.
