Miâara Jewish Cemetery
Morocco's largest Jewish cemetery - المقبرة اليهودية ميارا
The Miâara Jewish Cemetery dates from the seventeenth century. It’s the biggest Jewish cemetery in Morocco.
The whitewashed graves here are closer together than in a Muslim cemetery.
One thing Moroccan Jews have in common with their Muslim neighbours is revering holy figures – known in Islam as marabouts, or in Judaism as tzadiqim. Theirs are the tombs which are larger than the others. The practice of coming to their tombs for beraka (saintly blessing) is frowned upon by orthodoxy in both religions.
