1147–1269: Almohad

Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech

The Almoravids were driven out in 1147 by the Almohads, a more extreme fundamentalist movement from the Atlas mountains. They destroyed most of the Almoravid city and completely rebuilt it.

Marrakesh's most famous Almohad structure is the Koutoubia Mosque‎. The minaret of the Kasbah Mosque‎ is also Almohad, and one Almohad city gate, Bab Agnaou, still survives.
