• Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated with fervor on the evening of September 15, particularly on the Zócalo where thousands of people gather to hear the president shout a reenacted call to arms from the balcony of the Palacio Nacional. The so-called Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores) in 1810 marked the beginning of an 11-year war that resulted in Mexico’s independence from Spain. After the grito, stick around for the fireworks show. On September 16, a military parade rolls down Avenida Paseo de la Reforma.
