Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones
Hiking & history
This national park on the edge of southwestern Mexico City is home to a gorgeous 17th-century Carmelite convent, open-air eateries, waterfalls and extensive hiking trails cutting through a fragrant pine and oak forest.
A trail up to Cerro San Miguel, the highest peak, affords expansive vistas of the park and beyond. The area is referred to as a ‘Desierto’ (desert) because the location once served as a remote monastery. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. It’s best reached by car.
