The Old Port
Mostly re-purposed for leisure
Long the city’s commercial hub, industrial buildings of all vintages surround Montreal's Old Port though few still serve their original purposes.
Some are derelict, others have been re-purposed for visitors who wander the broad promenade and take river cruises from here in summer. One pier is home to the family-oriented Montreal Science Centre; others are favourites as event spaces.
Bonsecours Basin Island
Bonsecours Basin Island is the Old Ports epicentre of family fun with its quadricycle and pedal boat rentals and big wheel. In winter there’s outdoor ice-skating (free; rentals available).
Jet Boating
If all that sounds too tame, try Jet Boating the rapids that Samuel de Champlain attempted to navigate in 1608. Said rapids are basically why Montreal is where it is today. Expect a real soaking, so bring spare clothes (lockers available). The office lies opposite the entrance of the Montreal Science Centre.
