Te Anau Bird Sanctuary
See a living takahe!
An opportunity to get up and personal with some of Fiordland’s special birds that are difficult to see in the wild.
Top of the list is the takahe, thought to be extinct for 50 years before being rediscovered high in the Murchison Mountains near Te Anau in 1948 (look for the big takahe statue in Te Anau township).
You can also meet kea and kākā, native parrots. Entry is by donation - put some coins in the box.
