Rangitoto Summit Track
Climb Auckland's youngest volcano (2hrs return)
The youngest of Auckland’s volcanoes, Rangitoto emerged from the sea approximately 600 years ago in a series of fiery volcanic explosions and now sits in all its glory out in the Waitemata Harbour.
This is a relatively easy climb on well-formed paths from the island’s wharf through ancient lava fields that are home to the largest pōhutukawa forest in the world – and provide a home to dozens of shore, sea and forest birds.
At the summit (260m), there are spectacular views, and another track circles the rim of the crater. There’s an option to take a sidetrack to explore lava tunnels and caves.
