Auquiscocha
Quebrada Ulta hike (6hrs)
If you want a hike that’s sure to have very few people, go to Auquiscocha. First, drive from Carhuaz to Catay to start up the Quebrada Ulta. It’s along the route from Carhuaz to Chacas, so if you can’t find transportation that only goes to Catay, get on the colectivo to Chacas and tell the driver you want to get out in Catay.
From Catay, you can hike up to Aquiscocha Lake. The lake is at 4300m (14,108ft) and the hike takes about 6 hours roundtrip. Most itineraries estimate the hike up to the lake will take 3-4 hours, depending on fitness and acclimatization.
The lake is in Huascarán National Park, so you’ll pay the park fee at the ranger station at the border of the park.
