Dolceacqua
Sweet Water Town
This exceptional village, situated just a short distance north of Ventimiglia, is divided in two by the river Nervia. On the right bank is the new (15th century!) district of la Terra. However, it is the old town, Borgo on the left bank, which people come to see.
Ponte Vecchio
The jewel of Dolceacqua is the Ponte Vecchio. It was constructed over the river Nervia in the 15th century in order to link the two districts. Moreover, this elegant, single ogee arched structure spanning 33m/110ft is quite beautiful in its simplicity.
Home of the Dorias
Cross the steeply sloping bridge and you are in Borgo. Discover a fascinating conglomoration of old houses and the baroque Sant’ Antonio Abate topped off by the Castello dei Doria. The Doria family acquired the castle in the 13th century – their most well known member was Admiral Andrea Doria who supported Emperor Charles V in his fight against the Ottoman Turks.
