Edinburgh New Town

No 6, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh

In 1776 26-year old James Craig submitted plans to a competition for a planned settlement designed to relieve pressure on Edinburgh's decrepit and congested Old Town.

His plans provided the rich a model New Town of wide streets, grand crescents and squares around which to live.

The project greatly expanded over the years and came to involve many of Scotland’s foremost 18th-century architects, including Robert Adam.

As a result Craig's New Town has weathered incredibly well and continues to harbour some of the city's most desirable property.

Orientation

Many key spots in the New Town are along Princes Street, its centrepiece shopping street, which boasts stunning views of the Old Town, while adjacent wonderful public gardens lie in the atmospheric shadow of Edinburgh Castle.
