Golspie
Hiking & biking in the shadow of the laird
The pretty village of Golspie has its own little beach and makes for a pleasant overnight stop.
The Mannie & walks
But it’s best known for being overlooked by a 110-ft tall statue and column dedicated to the 1st Duke of Sutherland, erected in 1837, and now known locally as “The Mannie”. An inscription describes him as a “a judicious, kind and liberal landlord”, but says nothing of the 15,000 crofters he had evicted.
The statue marks the top of Ben Bhraggie where superb views reward the 2.5hr hike there and back from town.
An easier, but still rewarding, local walk is the hour-long Big Burn Hike which takes in a local waterfall.
Mountain Bike Trails
Golspie famed amongst Britain’s mountain bikers as the location for the superb Highland Wildcat Trails, a difficulty-graded trail network that ranks among Scotland’s Best. All trails are accessed from the end of Fountain Road.
