The East Coast

Tarbat Ness Lighthouse - Aerial Shot

Connected by the rapid A9 road and a major railway, the East Coast has a markedly different feel to the rest of the Northern Highlands. Much of the coastline is just as lovely as elsewhere, but the proud little towns, such as Tain or Wick, feel a good less remote and more businesslike.

Much of this stretch of coast is covered by Day 6: Tongue–Wick – part of the North Coast 500 In-A-Week itinerary.

Dunrobin Castle

French-style palace & gardens

Golspie

Hiking & biking in the shadow of the laird

Lairg Sheep Market

Europe's largest sheep market (mid-Aug)

Royal Dornoch Champ'ship Course

Classic seaside golf, but a bit remote

Tain

Pilgrimages, whisky & whisky pilgrimages

Tarbat Discovery Centre

Pictish culture & art

Wick

Where once the herring boomed
