Old Man of Hoy

Britain's most famous sandstone stack

The Old Man of Hoy is a finger of sandstone that rises some 150m from the sea and is hugely photogenic thanks to the way in which the rock reflects differences in sunlight.

Though the Scrabster–Stromness ferry veers towards the rock to give passengers a view, the best angle is probably from land and an hour's hike from Rackwick.

To get there on an active day out lasting 6-8hrs:

hire bikes at Stromness;
take the Stromness-Moaness (North Hoy) ferry (around 30mins);
cycle to Rackwick (around 30mins);
do the two-hour round trip hike (try to visit the Dwarfie Stane, a hollow rock, on the way);
ride back to Moaness (another 30mins)- then take the ferry back to Stromness (30mins)
