Skye & Around

Old Man Storr

The Isle of Skye is a microcosm of the Highlands. Many of its peninsulas have their own distinct feel, there's a multitude of different lochs and even a mountain range – the Cuillins – which can keep serious hikers and climbers occupied for days.

For others three good days out are particularly recommended:

• Wander Portree, Skye's main town, for a couple of hours then tour and do some short hikes to the wild geological formations of the Trotternish peninsula.

• Sightsee: visit Dunvegan Castle and gardens and the Talisker Distillery.

• Take a scenic drive to Elgol and a boat trip to Loch Coruisk, where several good hikes start.

But remember to make allowances for poor weather – Skye's not nicknamed "The Misty Isle" for nothing!
