The Cuillins

Skye's craggy backbone

cuillins

Skye's own mountain range, The Cuillins, are about 8 miles (13km) long and rise almost 1000m (3,300ft) above the sea with about twenty serious peaks over 3,000ft (called Munros).

The range divides into two pretty distinct sections. The Black Cuillins are a huge craggy mass that offer a real challenge to even hardcore climbers: their ultimate challenge is a two-day traverse across them. For others the Black Cuillins are often best appreciated from a distance - perhaps from a boat trip from Elgol which land at Loch Coruisk, from where a couple of straightforward hikes start.

The other part of the range lies to the east and is called the Red Cuillins (or the Red Hills). These are gentler, but still imposing and one superb and tough, but straightforward hike here is the ascent of Glamaig (2,500ft, 775m), from near Sconser or from the Sligachan Hotel (2hrs). For details see walkhighlands.co.uk/glamaig.
