Wildlife & Zoos

Wildlife in Scotland's uplands is mostly of the deer-and-grouse variety, and it's not uncommon to see either on hikes through moorland or away from major towns.
Meanwhile, at the coast, seabirds dominate several breeding sites; most spectacularly at Handa Island and Hermaness, but also at East Lothian's Bass Rock.
When by the sea also look out for seals, which can be found in almost all estuaries and often on or around rocky headlands in particular. If you're struggling to find them, head to Plockton where frequent short boat trips nearly always yield the goods.
Wildlife organisations
Habitats in many parts of Scotland are protected as wildlife reserves and run by one of three main bodies: The Scottish Wildlife Trust; Nature Scot; and the Royal Society for the Protection. Many locations are equipped with hides and other visitor-friendly facilities, making all three websites worth browsing.
