Northeast Thailand (Isaan)
Thailand’s northeast region, also known as Isaan, is the least visited part of the country, which can present challenges in terms of finding tourist-friendly places to stay and eat, but also offers the chance of a non-threatening adventure of discovery.
Isaan folk are extremely hospitable and their culture is strongly influenced by nearby Laos and Cambodia.
Main towns
The main towns of the region are Nakhon Ratchasima (aka Khorat), Khon Kaen (biggest city in Isaan), Nong Khai beside the Mekong River, and Ubon Ratchathani in the extreme southeast and also near the Mekong River. Travelling through the northeast inevitably involves overnighting in one or more of these towns, which all offer a good range of accommodation and good transport connections.
