Khao Yai National Park
Haven for wildlife
Khao Yai was the first national park to be established in Thailand (in 1962) and is still the best place to see elephants, sambar deer, macaques and hornbills in the wild in Thailand. Other animals you might see are gibbons, slow loris and bats. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fact that it’s less than a 2-hour drive from Bangkok makes it hugely popular at weekends and public holidays, so try to visit midweek if you can. The best way to get the most out of a visit is to join a group tour, led by guides who know exactly which creatures can be spotted in which locations at different times of the day.
Open 6am-6pm
Entry B400
Transport No public transport goes through the park, so it’s best to hire a car or motorbike to get there.
Accommodation The park provides lodges, which are reasonably well equipped, while on the road into the park from the north, you’ll find everything from 5-star resorts to cheap guesthouses.
Tours Lots of companies offer half-day, one-day and one-and-a half day tours. Our favourite is greenleaftour.com.
