Yorkshire Museum

Roman, Viking and Medieval insights

Yorkshire Museum View

A smallish museum, specialising in Roman and Medieval life with a local emphasis. It includes archaeological, biological and geological exhibits.

Offers activities for children, such as dressing up as a Roman or following guided activities about medieval life.

Highlights with local links include:

  • The Anglo Saxon helmet found in Coppergate in 1982.
  • The head of hair of a Roman woman.
  • A Viking sword.
  • The skull of a black woman from Roman York.
  • Specimens of the Great Auk, an extinct bird.
  • A marble head of the Roman emperor Constantine.
  • Treasure from Viking York.

A special interactive exhibition about Dinosaurs in Yorkshire has proved such a success that it has been extended for the next few years.

TIP If you intend visiting the museum as well as the Castle Museum, make sure you get a joint ticket with reduced charge.
