Kids & Families

Children at York Minster

The traffic-free footstreets, the varied attractions, including some providing hands-on experiences make York a hit for family visits. The fact that most things are in a small area means that places are reachable on foot.

In addition to the suggestions listed below, more active families might go on a two-wheeled tour local bike tour companies – trailer-bikes can be rented.

And on a wet day, exploring the library can provide a dry interlude. City Screen also has regular screenings for a young audience.

Popular sights for families

York Minster is awe-inspiring on account of its sheer size, grandeur and decoration, but don’t forget the small details, such as the scurrilous carvings by cheeky medieval stonemasons (eg gargoyles outside, or in the Chapter House). A trip to the roof is an exciting add-on for older children (8 and over). Pick up a free junior visitor backpack with discovery kit and ideas for young visitors.
