DIG

Hands-on history for kids that's never b-o-o-ring

What is it about 1000-year-old skulls and Viking poo that kids find so fascinating? DIG starts with this childhood curiosity and is certainly the highlight of many a young visitor's day in York.

The centre features not just skeletons, bones, skulls but lots of other things kids will love to see. In a deconsecrated 15th century church in the centre of the city, this centre is a great place for kids to experience York's history, not just look at it.

There are lots of practical activities of all kinds for budding archaeologists. Four excavation pits are filled with replica Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds. These are backed up by discovery rooms, labs and a 3D cinema.

Check out the website for special events.

TIP Reduced price entry with Pastport, a combo ticket with the other attractions in the Jorvik Group, owned by York Archaeological Trust (Jorvik Viking Centre, Barley Hall, Richard III experience, Henry VII experience)

TIP Tours last around 1 1/2 hours and are led by a young, trained, enthusiastic archaeologists. You can just turn up, but to avoid a wait in busy periods (eg school groups), it's a good idea to call and book.
