Barley Hall

An hour in the middle ages – and hands-on

When a derelict building off Stonegate was ripe for demolition thirty years ago, the remains of a medieval building dating mainly from the 1400s were discovered. After several years of excavation, the Archaeological Trust rebuilt the building. The interior as been created on the basis of careful research.

In the style of the home of a prosperous York family of the 1400s, the experience aims to be as authentic as possible.

In the candle-lit rooms you can explore, sit on chairs and handle the contents of the rooms. Staff and volunteers in medieval dress sometimes add to the atmosphere. Upstairs there are temporary exhibitions, together with a Tudor schoolroom to explore.
