Spurriergate Centre
Fair-priced eats in a historic setting (b,l; £)
A unique establishment at the end of Coney Street, one of York's main shopping streets. Staffed mainly by volunteers, this cheerful and lively café and restaurant is housed in a deconsecrated 12th century church.
Following financial difficulties, the centre is currently running with restricted opening hours (see below), though this may change. Information is on the website.
Service can take a while, particularly at busy periods
Upstairs coffee bar and small fair-trade shop.
As a Christian centre, this must be the only café in York with a free counselling service.
TIP Great place to bring kids. Lots of space and a children's play area with toys and books. (Where the altar was, under an old board with The Ten Commandments!)
TIP Free wifi available.
