National Railway Museum
Train heaven – not just for train buffs!
Gleaming steam locos, former royal carriages, historic fixtures, fittings, uniforms, signs, toys, and films make for a hands-on experience at Britain's National Railway Museum. And the up-close and climb-over exhibits are rounded off with an art exhibition.
A very popular attraction with children big and small, and anyone with nostalgia for the romantic age of rail, this is a memorable, and free, venue. Yet it is tucked away behind the station, out of the centre of town, almost hidden, and often missed by overseas visitors.
Afterwards explore the shop with models, dvds, books, paraphenalia. (Real devotees will also visit the model shop at Monk Bar).
TIPS
1 Don't miss the cool vintage posters or calendars for great gifts or souvenirs.
2 If it's already been a long day, you can take a miniature Road Train Bus that shuttles between the Minster and the museum (Adults £3.50, children £2.50 one way); half-hourly from Duncombe Place, (11.15am - 4.15pm)
