For Free

Can you get something for nothing (or "owt for nowt" as Yorkshire dialect would have it) in York?

Well, York isn't a cheap place to visit, but some of the best experiences here are free. Like a walk round the walls, a stroll round the snickelways, a visit to the national railway museum, or a peep into some of the old churches.

If you come at the right time of year, you might even get to watch a free special event, such as during the Viking Week (February) or the Dragon Boat races on the river (July).

Many visitors rate the well-informed free walking tour by a local, as one of their favourite memories of a visit – and the guides won't even take a tip for their trouble.

Finally, don't forget the chance to attend Evensong in York Minster
