Viking Week
The Vikings return - every February
There has been a rekindling of interest in York's 8Viking past, particularly since the archaeology around Coppergate and the opening of the popular Jorvik Viking Centre.
Every February, the city now celebrates its Viking history by plunging into a week of Viking fun.
Special events such as battle re-enactments take place near Clifford’s Tower in Museum Gardens. Enthusiasts in Viking dress demonstrate Nordic life in the open air.
The ceremonial burning of a Viking ship on the River Ouse marks the highlight of the week.
TIP The date varies each year with school holidays. Check the Information Office or its website for exact details.
