York Minster Exterior
From first impressions to up close
Walk round the building in an anti-clockwise direction, starting at the oak West Doors.
The building is in the Gothic style of architecture. Built over more than two centuries the style varies from Early English Gothic (13th century, lighter, pointed arches, narrow windows) to Perpendicular (14th-16th century, larger windows, tracery, timber roofing).
The carvings around the large West Door tell the story of Adam and Eve in small figures only 9 inches long. The statue is of St Peter, after whom the church is named.
Above the west front, the two towers (60 metres high) were built between 1438 and 1472. The pinnacles at the top are around 10 metres high.
The tower on the south (right) side has 14 bells, mainly 19th century, for change ringing, as well as 22 carillon bells.
