Gates

Not a gate as the world knows it !

Any visitor to York will soon be struck by the number of streets called -gate.

The word is a corruption of the Old Norse word gata meaning road or street, and is a remnant from Viking York when the Scandinavian invaders settled in the area from the year 866 on.

So, confusingly, in York the word gate means "street", while a gate in the city walls has quite a different name – Bar.

And sometimes, you'll find both used together as in Micklegate Bar
