York Minster Central Tower
Weighing 14,000 tons, but supported by vaulting
This is STAGE 2 of the The Minster in-2-Hours Itinerary.
Stand between the North and South Transepts, in front of the Choir screen.
Ceiling The tower is about 70 metres above you, about the height of a 23 storey building. It's claimed the tower weighs the equivalent of 40 jumbo jets. Unsurprisingly, its construction was not without problems, and in 1407 it actually collapsed in a storm. It was finally completed about 1480, however.
In the middle, the central boss looks small, but is in fact about 1.5 metres across. It shows St Peter (after whom the church is named) with two keys, as well as St Paul with his symbol – a sword.
Tip To look at the design of the tower ceiling without hurting your neck, look for the special wheeled table with a large mirror on it, provided just for the purpose of looking at the detail.
