Roman Bath Pub
Pub in a museum - or museum in a pub? (l; £)
The Roman Bath has three lives: a pub, a guest house and a museum. Remains of a Roman hypocaust were discovered under this pub in the 1930's, which led to a change of name to capitalise on its location.
For many years drinkers could look down through the glass floor to the Roman remains for free, but now the owners charge admission to view them ("exhibition" probably more accurate a description than "museum") though these are by no means extensive and a viewing will probably only be brief. An interest in Roman York will be better catered for by visits to the Multangular Tower and the Yorkshire Museum.
The slightly shabby establishment serves straightforward pub food during the day (pie and chips, fish and chips, sandwiches). (It's included here more as a curiosity than a recommendation.)
In the evenings the pub often becomes a lively free music venue, with rock and tribute bands and entertainment till around 11pm.
