Cafés & Bars
Athens, and Greece in general, is more of a coffee culture hence you won’t find many pubs. As an outside culture due to the glorious weather and good temperatures, even in winter bars usually have outside seating and always serve any alcoholic drink ordered with a small bowl of crisps or nuts.
One thing’s for sure, you won’t find binge drinking in Athens or Greece and it’s particularly frowned upon.
Bars and cafes tend to be open from early morning right the way through to 3 or 4am. Bars do serve coffees too, but tend to stop serving these at 9pm.
Most people start to go out from 11pm - but not because they’ve been drinking at home first.
Good people watching neighbourhoods to sit and have a drink at your leisure are Plaka, Monastiraki and the upscale neighbourhood of Kolonaki.
