Aboriginal Art & Culture
Custodians of the Australian continent for millennia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people have a deeply spiritual, intuitive, sustainable connection to the land (known as ‘Country’).
There are over 500 Indigenous nations across Australia and the concept of The Dreaming is central to each nation’s lore and culture. Loosely translated, The Dreaming refers to the beliefs and stories used to explain how the spiritual ancestors created the land in a period known as The Dreamtime. The Dreaming explains everything from local geology and fauna to the seasons and constellations. It is also used to guide each nation’s cultural codes and value systems, from the treatment of animals to the manner in which strangers are welcomed to Country.
The Dreaming is non-linear and ever evolving. Importantly, it informs much Aboriginal cultural output, from ancient engravings, stencils and drawings, to ceremonial song and dance, to the canvases of accomplished modern artists like Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Yannima Tommy Watson and Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi.
While by no means a comprehensive list, below are some important sites, events and cultural institutions for those seeking insight into Indigenous Australia’s cultures and creativity.
