Lauzes
Stone slab roofs
Lauzes roofs are found throughout the Périgord and the Quercy on all kinds of structures from cottages to châteaux and churches.
Usually these are constructed using limestone slabs which can be quite large but provide a very substantial roof covering which is not easily damaged by winds or rain. They are extremely heavy and can weigh several tons so the structure of the building has to be substantial also.
Some of the best examples of this type of roof can be found in Sarlat, Collonges-la-Rouge, the Château de Losse, St-Crépin-Carlucet and countless other towns and villages throughout the region.
