Wells
Beach, sculpture & railways
Wells is a compact harbour town with sheltered tidal creeks and salt marshes which form a nature reserve. Most of the town is centred around the quayside harbour, with an array of mainly local shops and cafes.
A narrow guage Wells Harbour railway offers a quick trip between the quay and the beach car park.
Beach
A short walk from the beach car park is the start of the long sandy beach partly lined with colourful beach huts. A 2 mile walk along the beach or through the pinewoods brings you to Holkham Bay, which has appeared in numerous films like Shakespeare in Love. No facilities are available.
Beware the tides. Every summer people have to be rescued by lifeboats from sandbanks along the beach. The sea can come in very quickly.
Lifeboat Horse
In Wells harbour, the Lifeboat Horse is very striking. The sculptured horse is partially submerged at high tide and looks like it is swimming through the waves. It is a tribute to the horses who helped launch the town’s lifeboat.
Wells & Walsingham Light Railway
The narrow gauge Wells & Walsingham Light Railway provides a relaxing, scenic ride to the medieval pilgrim village of Walsingham, 4 miles away.
Wells is located on the A149 between Holkham and Stiffkey.
Transport: Accessible by car or bus. The Coastliner and Coasthopper bus route provides a link between the North Norfolk coastal towns. There are five car parks within the town.
