The Writers’ Museum

Literary backgrounder

17136-Edinburgh

Tucked down a wynd off the Royal Mile, the 1622 Lady Stair's House is a suitably venerable place to learn about great Scottish Writers. Three dominate: Robert Burns (1759-1796), Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) and Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894).

The museum collection is relatively small, but includes some beautiful manuscripts, along with some personal possessions (including Burn's writing desk and Scott's chessboard) and engaging portraits; all of which help flesh out the men.

The museum entrance is on "Lady Stair's Close", an alley some 50 metres uphill and on the same side of the Royal Mile as Deacon Brodie's pub.
