Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
Graceful & exotic urban lung
Edinburgh's attractive and varied Royal Botanic Garden is dominated by mature trees and a huge variety of plants from around the world.
They're great for lazing around, picnicking or aimless wondering, with plenty of intriguing flora, sculptures and sometimes even occasional art exhibitions and nighttime illuminations (check the website) to appreciate. Fine views of central Edinburgh are an unexpected bonus.
The gardens actually began life in 1670 and elsewhere – as a Physic Garden near Holyrood House – but were moved to their present location, north of the New Town, in 1820.
Areas to look out for include the Chinese Garden with the world’s biggest collection of Asian wild plants outside the continent and the unkempt Scottish native woodland that successfully echoes the Highlands.
