Gladstone’s Land
17th-century high-tenement house
Gladstone’s Land, a carefully restored 1617 merchant’s house, provides a snapshot of the life of rich Edinburgers before they resettled in the New Town.
Locally called “lands” these properties were dotted around the Old Town and were typically tall and narrow. Gladstone’s Land boasts six storeys and still retains its original street arcades.
Inside, the highlight is a beautiful Painted Chamber with fine Scandinavian floral ceiling designs. But of course this extravagance wasn't representative of daily life at the time, as a preserved pair of wooden overshoes here remind. Edinburgh’s dirty streets necessitated these in the days when the city was nicknamed Auld Reekie (Old Smelly).
